The Ministry of the Interior has confirmed that Monday, August 4, 2025, will be a regular working day and not a public holiday. The Ministry has therefore urged the public and institutions to take note and plan their activities accordingly.
The clarification follows recent amendments to Ghana’s national commemorative calendar. In June 2025, Parliament passed a bill restoring September 21—the birthday of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah—as Founders’ Day, a statutory holiday in honour of the country’s independence struggle.
Previously, August 4 had been observed as Founder’s Day to mark the formation of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC). However, under the revised legislation, the date is now classified as a commemorative day.
In a statement dated July 31, the Ministry explained that commemorative days do not qualify as statutory public holidays and therefore do not warrant time off work.
This announcement settles public speculation, confirming that August 4, 2025, will not be observed as a holiday.
