Atwima-Mponua struggling with inadequate funds

Poor internal revenue generation combined with inadequate funding from the government is crippling the performance of the Atwima-Mponua District Assembly.

The assembly is finding it difficult to carry through its development agenda to transform the socio-economic situation of the predominantly farming population, says Deputy District Coordinator, Mr Simon Twum Nkansah.

The district, the second largest in the Ashanti Region, in terms of land size is struggling with bad roads and the lack of key infrastructure in the areas of health, education and security.

Mr Nkansah said despite the challenges the assembly “has not gone to sleep”.

He said the assembly is working hard and with determination to find new ways of doings things, to make the socio-economic conditions in the communities better.

He made this known while contributing to discussions at a stakeholders meeting held at Nyinahin on the GNA/STAR-Ghana media auditing and tracking of development projects, an initiative, launched to put a spotlight on how government’s resources are affecting the lives of the rural population.

The goal is to aid transparency, promote accountability and good governance.

Atwima-Mponua was created 10 years ago to fast track the area’s socio-economic development but has since been struggling and has been rated among the least developed in the region.

Mr Nkansah said the assembly has made health, education and security, priority.

He said being a cocoa growing district with many settlements, which are far apart, providing the people with their fair share of development projects, is proving to be difficult.

The bad nature of the road network is also compounding the problem.

Mr Nkansah said the assembly has already taken steps to fix some of the deteriorated roads.
