Nyinahin (Ash), May 12, GNA – Mr Solomon Boakye, Atwima-Mponua District Disease Control Officer, has attributed the causes of malaria and mortality of children less than five years to the failure of communities to keep their surroundings clean.
He said malaria accounts for 44 per cent of all Out-Patient Department (OPD) attendance and 22 per cent of mortality of children less than five years.
Mr Boakye was speaking at the launch of Child Health Week in the Atwima-Mponua district under the theme, Healthy Environment, Healthy Children” at Nyinahin on Wednesday.
Mr Boakye said his outfit would provide Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) vitamin ‘A’ supplementation, sales of insecticide mosquito treated nets and weighing of children aged 0-5 years. He said education of caregivers and mothers on home management of fevers would be given and that the promotion of use of iodated salt and family planning services would be provided. Mr Emmanuel Justice Mensah, the District Nutrition Officer, advised mothers to immunize their children and ensure that they sleep in the insecticide mosquito treated bed nets.
