Attempted robbery – Driver nabbed

Accra, July 30, GNA – The Accra Regional Police Command on Wednesday nabbed a driver, who plotted with armed robbers to rob his master at gunpoint while on his way to a funeral at Dunkwa-on-Offin in the Western Region.

Chief Superintendent, Bright Oduro, Regional Crime Officer, told the Ghana News Agency that the suspect Samuel Agbozu, 33, who hails from Addidome in the Volta Region, was arrested after he masterminded a plan by which armed robbers would have attacked his master, Mr Thomas Appiah, an Ex-Police Officer.

He said the Police got wind of Agbozo’s plot and planted an undercover agent, who feigned interest in the move.

Chief Superintendent Oduro said Agbozu informed his accomplices that his Master had mining concessions in the Western Region and that at the end of every month he took huge sums of money to the site to pay his workers.

He said Agbozo also told his accomplices that at end of this month, for instance, Mr Appiah would be taking about 17 billion cedis to the site and that it would be appropriate to strike at that time. Mr Oduro said Agbozo told a friend of his to recruit armed robbers to acquire a car and track them while on their way and at a particular spot he would signal the robbers to launch the attack.

Agbozo also asked that his Master, who is an older person, must not be hurt but rather he (Agbozo) must be hit hard enough to incapacitate him so that he would not be able to drive his master’s car to trail the robbers after the robbery.

The Regional Crime Officer said Agbozo also suggested how his accomplices could hire guns to execute the operation. He said on the appointed day the Police moved in to arrest Agbozu after Mr Appiah confirmed that he would be travelling on that with his driver.

Agbozo later told the GNA that, even though, he planned the attempted robbery he did not mention such a huge sum. The Police said Agbozo mentioned such a huge amount in order to attract potential robbers to join the operation.
