Atta Akyea advices Ken Kuranchie to tone down

The managing editor of the Daily Searchlight newspaper, Ken Kuranchie stepped out of his incarceration for contempt with an announcement. Jail will not stop him from expressing his views on the ongoing election petition hearing.

He remained defiant and unrepentant after 10 days saying “I don’t think that what I wrote was problematic”.

He hinted of a legal reaction to his imprisonment at an appropriate time.

But his lawyer Atta Akyea has counseled that although Ken is entitled to his views, the journalist should tone down and reflect on his actions.

He said he gave this advice to Ken Kuranchie while he was in jail.

The option of applying for review of the Supreme Court decision was open to him, but he suggested that after serving his sentence, this line of action may be undesirable.

He should “relax with his family,” Atta Akyea reiterated.

The lawyer said, if Ken believes strongly in his views enough to suffer imprisonment as a prisoner of conscience, it was “up to him” because ultimately “a lawyer cannot change the belief system of his client”.
