Atiavi Traditional Council passes resolution on funeral celebration

Atiavi (VR), April 7, GNA – The Atiavi Traditional Council in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region, has resolved to streamline funeral celebrations.

Togbui Adri IV, Dufia of Atiavi announced the resolutions adopted at a meeting held at Akamu Adri Palace on March 6, this year, at a durbar to climax the Easter celebrations at Atiavi. He explained that the measures were to reduce cost of funeral celebrations as well as to enable the people to be more productive. The council resolved that funeral celebrations would be organised once a month, no wake-keeping; however the deceased’s family could keep vigil and no bereaved family would be allowed to purchase a special cloth for funerals except the chief’s funeral.

Others were that permit should be obtained before burial; and any pupil found dancing during funeral celebrations would be fined GH¢20 to be paid by the parents; while the proprietor of a video centre that entertained pupils would be fined GH¢50. Togbui Adri warned that the resolutions would be enforced and offenders prosecuted.

He expressed the hope that the resolution would ensure that pupils take their studies serious and reduce teenage pregnancy.
