Kenyase (B/A), Jan 5, GNA – The Asutifi District Assembly collected 530,083,178 million cedis as at last November, representing 71.38 per cent of the estimated revenue for 2003.
The estimated revenue was 742,599,923 million cedis. Mr Michael Nsiah-Agyapong, District Chief Executive, who was addressing the third ordinary meeting of the District Assembly, said the performance “is quite encouraging but there is still more room for improvement.”
He said the revenue was derived from rates, lands, fees and fines, licences/permits, rent, investment and miscellaneous. Mr Nsiah-Agyapong said the need to make district sub-structures functional remained the top most issue on the development agenda of the District Assembly and the Government. In view of this six administrative offices are being constructed for Kenyasi Number One; Kenyasi Number Two; Hwidiem, Gambia, Nkaseim and Ntotroso.
Mr Nsiah-Agyapong said in view of the high demand for accommodation at Kenyasi and surrounding towns, the assembly would build two staff quarters every year, one of which would be used as a guesthouse. The DCE said he had proposed that the assembly builds a block factory to serve contractors executing its projects.
He commended teachers and the District Directorate of Education for the district’s exemplary performance in the 2003 Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE).
The district placed 12th in the country and second in the Region. “I was overwhelmed with these enviable positions and I implore members to join me to express our gratitude and unreserved appreciation to our teachers and the District Directorate of Education, especially those teachers in the rural communities,” he said.
Mr Nsiah-Agyapong said 1.6 billion cedis had been allocated to the Hwidiem Secondary School that has been selected as the model secondary school in the District.
The projects to be undertaken include girls’ dormitory, staff bungalows, dining hall land a new administration block. Mr Nsiah-Agyapong said under the Rural Enterprise Development Programme the Assembly would develop mining and cultivation and processing of ginger, plantain and oil palm. Present was Mrs. Cecilia Amoah, MP for Asutifi South.
