Assist unit committees to perform – Chief

Topease(E/R), April 10, GNA – Nana Ansah Kwadwo, Mankrado of Topease in the West Akim District of the Eastern Region, has urged Ghanaians not to undermine the role of the unit committees in the local government system. Nana Ansah affectionately called Akora Ofori by his subjects, called on traditional rulers and other related institutions to assist the committees with accommodation and other logistics to enable them perform creditably, since their respective district assemblies could not offer all the help needed. Akora Ofori was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), shortly after inspecting a GETFund school block under construction at Topease on Thursday.

Madam Rosina B. Otchere, Headmistress of the Methodist Primary (A&B) School accompanied the Mankrado, Unit Committee members and the Akora Ofori told the unit committee members to endeavour to work assiduously, because they formed the basis of the local government structure and must be strengthened to ensure a solid foundation for the nation’s democracy. “Since the district assembly concept was people centred, the role of the committees was crucial to achieving participatory democracy at the grassroots,” he stated. The Mankrado noted that the work of the unit committees was voluntary and it was imperative for people to appreciate their efforts, in order to whip up interest in district level elections.
