Assist security agencies to maintain democracy – Addo-Kufuor urges

donors

Accra, July 22, GNA – Defence Minister Dr Kwame Addo-Kufuor on Thursday urged the donor community to assist security agencies with fledgling democracies to help sustain peace and democratic governance. “In our interactions with donor agencies, their interest lies in the areas of health, education and agriculture”, Dr Addo-Kufuor told the visiting former Prime Minister of Canada, Ms Kim Campbell, who paid a courtesy call on him at his office at Burma Camp in Accra.

He said security was also vital in the African Region where inability of countries to protect their natural resources had degenerated into security crises.

Dr Addo-Kufuor appealed for donor support to equip the Ghana Armed Forces to play its statutory role.

He asked Ms Campbell, who is now the Secretary-General and Deputy President of the Prestigious Club of Madrid, to use her position to promote democratic governance in Africa.

The Club of Madrid made up of former Heads of State, Prime Ministers and other prominent people in society, aims at promoting democratic rule in developing countries like Ghana.

Ms Campbell said she would share her rich experience with Ghana to boost its democratic process.

The Former Premier is in Ghana to participate in the ongoing three-week Ghana Security Sector Governance and Management Course being organised by the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College for the various security agencies and civil organizations. Ms Campbell had paid a similar call on President John Agyekum Kufuor at the Castle, Osu. 22 July 04
