Assemblyman initiates clean-up programme

Saltpond, March 28, GNA – The Assemblyman for Nkubem Electoral Area of Saltpond, Mr Francis Ejaaku Donkoh has initiated a programme of periodic clean-up exercise to improve sanitation in the area. Speaking to the GNA after one of the exercise at the weekend, Mr Donkoh said a task force would be set up to arrest people who littered their surroundings, particularly with sachet water containers. He appealed to the Mfantseman District Assembly to enforce by-laws against littering especially of sachet water containers, which had made the surroundings especially gutters “an eye sore” particularly at Saltpond and Mankessim.

The Assemblyman noted that gutters had been chocked with plastic containers, which could cause flooding when it rained. Mr Donkoh, who is the Executive Director of FED Kastle Promotions, a non-governmental organisation expressed his support for moves by some District Assemblies to ban the production of sachet water in their areas.

He called for the re-introduction of the sale of iced drinking water from pots and other containers using cups but said the system had to be improved to make it more hygienic.
