Assemblyman denies inciting people to insult MP

Mr Abeiku Ansah, assemblyman for the Agona Asafo Electoral Area, has denied inciting some members and supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to insult the Deputy Central Regional Minister, Mrs Queenster Pokua Sawyer.

Mr Ansah, affectionately called ‘Farther, said he was accused of inciting some NDC members against Mrs Sawyer, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area.

According to the Assemblyman, Mrs Sawyer was at Agona Asafo to canvas for votes towards the upcoming parliamentary primaries re-scheduled for November 21.

The assemblyman said he went to Agona Swedru in his private vehicle, and on reaching where the MP was in a meeting with the delegates at Agona Asafo, he saw that the members of the Agona Asafo NDC Ward were engaged in a scuffle.

Mr Ansah said as an assemblyman for the area, he stopped and upon enquiry, he observed that the delegates were hooting at the MP, and using some filthy words on her.

According to him, he left the scene because he was not a member of the NDC.

The Assemblyman said on his way to town some few hours later, he met three police vehicles, one from Mankrong-Junction and two from the Agona Swedru Divisional Headquarters.

He said he stopped and surrendered to them when he was told they were in to arrest him..

The Assemblyman said at the Agona Swedru police station, the Police told him that the MP and Deputy Central Regional Minister had ordered his arrest for allegedly inciting the people of Agona Asafo to insult her.

According to the Assemblyman he denied the offence, but he was detained on Friday and granted bail the following morning.

Chief Superintendent Ahmed Issah Yakubu, Agona Swedru Divisional Police Commander, confirmed the story to the Ghana News Agency in an interview that the Minister’s aides alleged that the Assemblyman incited the people to insult and hoot at her.

The Divisional Commander indicated that the assemblyman had since been granted bail, while investigations continued into the matter.
