Assembly Votes 5 Million Cedis To Fight Disaster

Nsein (Western Region), 14 Oct. The Nzema East District Assembly has voted five million cedis for disaster management for this year. Mr. J. R.D. Kobinah, Nzema east district chief executive, made this known in a speech read on his behalf at the launching of world disaster day at a public forum at the Nsein Senior Secondary School, near Axim. It was jointly organised by the district administration and the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) under the theme ”Disaster preparedness for a safer world”. Mr. Kobinah said various types of disasters which beset the world include fire, flood, earthquake, Bushfire and rainstorm. He said because most people do not prepare for disasters, they cause a lot of hardships when they strike. This is why it is important to promote educational programmes that would enable people to prepare adequately for them. Mr. Kobina announced that the GNFS is to embark on an educational programme on fire prevention in the district and urged the people to take it seriously. The District Fire Officer, Mr. Kobina Boedzie, who took the audience through lessons in fire prevention, said fire outbreaks are on the increase country-wide. This, he said, is a problem for the government and must be the concern of every Ghanaian. He, therefore, urged the people to be cautious in dealing with fire both at home and in the work-place.
