Assembly to prosecute defaulters of Poverty Alleviation Loan

Daboase (W/R), Dec 20, GNA – The Mpohor-Wassa East District Assembly is to prosecute defaulters of its Poverty Alleviation Loan, Mr Edward Tawiah Amprofi, the District Chief Executive (DCE), said on Friday.

Addressing the fifth ordinary meeting of the Assembly at Daboase, the DCE said the assembly’s solicitors have filed writs against the defaulters who would appear before court.

Mr Amprofi said solicitors of the assembly served the defaulters with final demand notices six months ago and there has not been any improvement in the repayment schedule.

He said the National Voluntary Youth Association with assistance from the Japan Embassy in Ghana was to construct six youth centres at Daboase.

Mr Amprofi said the provision of the facility could mitigate the accommodation problem facing the assembly. He regretted that 10 junior secondary schools (JSSs)in the district had zero percent in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Mr. Amprofi mentioned the schools as the Edda, Ayinabrim, Amponsaso, Edomase, Sekyere Nsuta, Asratoase, Apeasuman, Sarponso number two, Atwebasa and Eswenase JSSs.

Mr Amprofi said the overall performance of schools in the district in the examination was impressive with the Subri Industrial Plantation Limited (SIPL) District Council JSS recording 100 percent with 19 students scoring aggregate six.

Mr. Amprofi said the Jomoro and the Aowin-Suaman Districts placed first and second respectively in the Ghana Education Service (GES) ranking of performance of districts in the BECE.

He said the Mpohor Wassa East District took the 91st position out of the 110 districts in the country.

Mr Amprofi said Pupil-Teacher ratio in rural schools was low and that had been the major contributing factor to the poor performance of some schools.

He said the District Education Oversight Committee (DEOC) has suspended some schools with very low enrolment and merged them with well populated nearby schools to improve the Pupil/Teacher Ratio situation.
