Assembly members to get paid in Mahama’s second term

Chief Executive officers of Ghana’s metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies are to be elected in the next government of the National Democratic Congress, President Mahama has promised.

“We will also implement the Constitution Review Committee’s recommendation to have MMDCE’s elected,” President Mahama said Tuesday at an event in Accra to present highlights of his party’s 2016 manifesto.

Currently, the chief executives are nominated by the president as per Article 243(1) of the 1992 Constitution and Section 20(1) of the Local Government Act 1993, Act 462.

They are subsequently approved by the members of the assembly The election of the 216 chief executive officers, president Mahama explained, would “promote performance based competition” among the assemblies.

Mr Mahama said the next government of the NDC will ensure the implementation of the recommendation by the Constitutional Review Commission to pay assembly members allowances.

“We will initiate processes to implement the constitutional review commission’s recommendation to pay assembly members allowances.”
