Begoro, (E/R) Feb. 4, GNA – The District Directorate of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in the Fanteakwa District has attributed a low coverage of registered people for the scheme to its politicisation by some assembly members in the district. Speaking to Ghana News Agency at Begoro on Wednesday, the Public Relations Officer of the scheme, Mr Michael Padi, said 5,300 people registered for the scheme at the close of registration last December, out of the over 36,000 potential members.
Mr Padi said the number comprised 4,279 SSNT contributors, 699 fully paid and 322 partially paid up members.
He said since registration of members had ended, late comers would be made to fully pay the whole annual premium of 72,000 cedis before being permitted to register.
Mr Padi said the photo-taking exercise would begin this month and end on April seven, adding that, registration for people from the formal sector would continue until the end of the photo taking exercise. He said the scheme would take off in the district just after the photo-taking exercise and identification cards issued to members. Mr Padi appealed to the government to provide the sector with a vehicle to facilitate transportation.
