Assembly members asked to promote health of citizens

Nadowli, Sept. 12, GNA – Assembly Members have been asked not to limit their activities to enhancing governance at the grassroots but to promote health and other welfare services of the people.

Mr. Abu Kansangbata, Nadowli District Chief Executive, who made the appealed, said that despite efforts being made by the assembly and the Ghana Health Service to improve health care delivery, there were still challenges leading to maternal and infant deaths in the rural communities.

He was addressing members of the Nadowli District Assembly at its first ordinary meeting at Nadowli.

Mr. Kansangbata said the district had already recorded two maternal deaths and 20 unsafe abortion cases this year.

He said: Many young girls were still practicing unsafe abortions while maternal and infant mortality were also occurring in the communities and assembly members must not close their eyes to the situation.

“Our people should be advised to patronize family planning services to avoid unwanted pregnancies on one hand and on the other hand if they do occur, they should report to recognized health facility for assistance”.

Mr. Kansangbata said the wealth of the every nation depends largely on the good health of its people.

He appealed to the Assembly to support Ghana Health Service in the district to educate the people to make good use of the Community Health Planning and Services Compounds, accept referrals and report early at referral centres for prompt medical attention.

Mr. Kansangbata said work on a children’s ward for the Nadowli District Hospital would commence soon.

He said that the Assembly had generated 105,240.60 Ghana Cedis from local sources as against 165,722.00 targeted for the year.
