Assembly Members advised to vote for Nominees based on capacity

Kumasi, July 5, GNA – A Clergyman has advised District Assembly Members not to allow monetary and material considerations to influence their confirmation or rejection of the President’s nominees for the position of District Chief Executives (DCE).

Bishop J N K Boateng, Founder and Leader of the Gospel Revival Church of Christ who gave the advice said by so doing, they would maintain their mandate to check the nominees, should they be confirmed as DCEs.

He gave the advice at the closing of a two-day crusade by the Gospel Revival Church of Christ at Sofoline, in Kumasi on Sunday. Bishop Boateng said Assembly Members should rather be guided by the capacity of the nominee to ensure peace and development as well as their moral conduct.

He expressed worry about the neglect of rural communities by District Assemblies, in terms of the provision of social amenities in favour of the bigger towns.

He reminded the District Assemblies that just like the urban centres, residents of villages had an equal right to a fair share of development, which should not be denied them.

Bishop Boateng said the District Assemblies should not use taxes mobilised in towns as a basis to give such areas more projects saying, “the rural dwellers, apart from paying taxes and levies, also contribute to the production of food crops and cash crops vital for the economy”. He said even though the Assemblies were obliged to provide social amenities, it was the duty of communities to initiate projects rather than waiting for the Assembly.

Bishop Boateng noted that by starting projects on their own, Government’s attention would be drawn to support their execution and completion. .
