Assembly member and son killed in road accident

An Assembly Member and his 14-year old son were killed in a bizarre accident when a 207 Mercedes Benz bus crashed onto their motorbike on the Kumasi-Mampong road on Thursday.

The deceased, Mr Ofori Acheampong, Assembly Member for Amoaman in the Asante-Mampong Municipality, and Master Vincent Adu Asare, a student of the Nsutaman Senior High School (SHS), were travelling from Nsuta to Ninting.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Benjamin Gyasi, Asante-Mampong Divisional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), confirmed the accident to the GNA saying the motorbike was ahead of the bus.

He said on reaching Ninting, Mr Acheampong who is also the Sports Master of the Nsutaman SHS, attempted to make a “u-turn” but the vehicle veered off its lane and run into the bike, knocking them off.

He said the deceased at the time were not wearing helmets and sustained serious injuries and were pronounced dead on arrival at the Asante-Mampong Government Hospital.

DSP Gyasi said the driver of the Benz bus has already been remanded into police custody by an Nsuta Circuit Court for further investigations.**
