Assembly forms taskforce to check defiant drivers

Agona Swedru, Dec 3, GNA – The Agona District Assembly has formed a taskforce to arrest and prosecute drivers who refuse to load at the stations, thus dodging payment of tolls.

This would enable the assembly to generate enough revenue to meet its target set for 2006 and also help reduce traffic congestion in the town. The taskforce was formed in collaboration with the three transport unions operating in the district namely Progressive Transport Owners Association (PROTOA), Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and Co-operative Transport Union.

Mr. Michael Kwame Obeng, District Finance Officer, who was speaking during the inauguration of the 25- member taskforce, said drivers who would be arrested loading outside lorry parks would pay spot fines of 300, 000 cedis.

He said the assembly had decided to take legal action against some institutions and individuals who are indebted to the assembly.
