Assembly donates TV to home

Gomoa Ankamu, Aug. 3, GNA – The Gomoa District Assembly has donated a 29-inch television set and a DVD valued at GHc5000 to the Mephibosheth Training Centre, a home for children with disabilities at Gomoa Ankamu near Apam in the Central Region.

The centre was established by the Mephibosheth Ministry, a religious non-governmental organization and commissioned in 2003 to train children with disabilities to become useful citizens. Mr Fred O. Addae, Gomoa District Coordinating Director, who made the presentation commanded the NGO for helping the children, who under their physical condition could have gone to beg for alms to become self-supporting.

Mr. Addae said the items, were to make them happy to enjoy programmes their counterparts were watching at home. He said the assembly had supported people with disabilities in the district, including the training of 20 in grass cutter and snail rearing.

It also gave GHc10,000 to support their activities and programmes. Mr. Daniel Wallace Akyeampong, District Social Welfare Officer, urged parents not to discriminate against children with disabilities but to help them to develop their talents.

“They are not stupid but are handicapped in certain ways,” he said. Pastor Joseph Jehu-Appiah, Director of the Centre, appealed to the Assembly to include it in the school-feeding programme since the centre catered for everything.

The Pastor said the centre was being run through benevolence and fund raising activities.

He gave the assurance that the items would be put to good use. Mr. Stephen Bertino, District Electoral Officer, who chaired the function commended the centre for the god work it was doing for the children and appealed to citizens of the district to support it.
