Assemblies asked to change from militant approach of collecting revenue

Tumu, Dec. 23, GNA – Mr. Mahmud Khalid, the Upper West Regional Minister, has appealed to district assemblies in the region to move away from the militant approach of collecting revenue from people. He said time had come for them to adopt more explanatory and human centred approach to encourage the people to honour their tax obligations. Mr. Khalid was addressing members of the Sissala East District Assembly at its third ordinary session at Tumu on Monday.

This approach, he said, would yield more dividends if Internal Generated Funds (IGF) projects were clearly labelled as a way of reassuri= ng the citizenry that their monies were being put to good use. He appealed to the district assemblies to ensure that modalities an= d time frames set for collecting rates and other revenues were adhered to a= nd periodically reviewed to enable them to meet their targets. Madam Alijata Sulemana, Sissala East District Chief Executive, said the assembly had received 234,000.00 Ghana cedis, representing two quarters o= f its share of the Common Fund.

She said part of the amount had been used to purchase a tipper truck and a grader. Madam Alijata said the assembly was spending 29,300.00 Ghana cedis to sponsor 85 teacher trainees and 51 nurses trainees to help improve the quality of teaching and learning in schools as well as the health of the people.
