Ashanti Regional Police institute measures for crime prevention

Kumasi, Sept. 15, GNA – The Ashanti Regional Police Command has instituted measures to reduce crime in the region. These include encouraging the formation of Neighbourhood Watch Committees in all communities, regular training scheme for members of the committees and informants and the establishment of a more practical and cordial police-public relationship.

Chief Superintendent of Police Kwakye Ntiamoah, Kumasi Central Divisional Commander, announced this when addressing the opening session of a three-day training programme for Executives of Neighbourhood Watch Committees in the Ashanti Region in Kumasi on Wednesday. The programme was organized by the Ashanti Regional Branch of the Association and attended by 109 delegates from 70 communities and branches in the region.

Chief Superintendent Ntiamoah said even though Neighbourhood Watch Committees play a vital role in crime prevention they were not to replace the police or usurp their duties. He said they were to complement efforts of the police to protect lives and properties therefore, they should work in collaboration with the police.

Mr. Korang Takyi, Ashanti Regional Co-ordinator of the Association said although there was no financial reward or remuneration for members of the Committees, that should not deter them from their assignments. Mr. Ibrahim Yakubu, Ashanti Regional Secretary of the Association said the impact of their operations would be appreciated only when there was reduction in crime in their areas of operation. He therefore, stressed the need for the members to work relentlessly and be bold in exposing suspected criminals.
