Ashanti police cautions parties on Offinso by-elections

Kumasi, Oct. 12, GNA – The Ashanti Regional Police Command has cautioned supporters of the various political parties contesting the Offinso by-election against acts that will breach the peace in the area. It said the police was poised to deal ruthlessly with any individual or group of individuals who would attempt to foment trouble before, during and after the by-elections.

This is contained in a statement signed by Inspector Mohammed Tanko of the Regional police public relations unit and issued in Kumasi on Thursday, after a meeting with the representatives of the various political parties by the Regional Police commander, ACP Frank Adu Poku. The warning comes in the wake of alleged confrontation between the supporters of some political parties, especially the NDC and the NPP in the run-up to the elections.

According to the statement, the success of the by-elections would depend largely on the leadership of the political parties and how they would organise their followers and give them good counselling on the process.

It therefore appealed to all parties involve in the elections to co-operate with the security agencies to ensure peaceful and transparent by-elections.

The statement said the meeting, which was attended by the regional leadership of the NPP and the NDC and the regional Director of the BNI, the Regional Security Co-ordinator and the Commanding Officer of the 4BN, was held in an atmosphere of peace, understanding and mutual respect.

It said leaders of the parties agreed in principle to cooperate with the security agencies to ensure peaceful and transparent by-election. The also urged the police to maintain peace and order while at the same time showing professionalism and good standards in their performance.
