Ashanti police at war with gangs

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has announced plans to arrest gangsters and other criminals in the various towns and communities in the region.

DCOP Ken Yeboah, Ashanti Regional Police Commander, who made the announcement, said the police would be ruthless in dealing with the criminal gangs.

His comment follows an attack on one Collins Opoku by some youth of Abuakwa Zongo last Saturday during the funeral of a 30-year-old man, Frimpong aka Opope.

The youth, belonging to gang at Abuakwa, stormed the venue and inflicted cutlass wounds on the victim to show supremacy in the boisterous town.

DCOP Ken Yeboah, at a press briefing, told the media that the suspects travelled there to avenge an alleged assault on a member of the gang by another gangster called ‘Rebel Leader.’

According to him, it took the intervention of the police to restore law and order.

He added that eight men suspected to be members of the group were arrested and later charged with the use of offensive weapons and causing harm.

The police commander gave their names as Gabriel Abdulai, Masawudu Issah aka Abodie, Iddrisu Mohammed, 24; Musa Alidu, 20; Abdul Basit, 18; Shamel Mohammed, 24; Abdul Shabuku, 24; and Ibrahim Yahaya aka Butterfly, 19.

He disclosed that the suspects have since been remanded into custody by the Nkawie Circuit to reappear on May 4, 2017.
