Ashanti, Brong Ahafo Regions Draw In Boxing Tourney

Kumasi, Aug. 27, – Brong Ahafo (B/A) regional boxing squad drew 2-2 with their Ashanti regional counterparts in a special friendly boxing tournament staged in Kumasi. The four-bout tournament formed part of preparations of the two regions towards this year’s weeklong National Sports Festival in Kumasi from September 6-13. Mbawomia (Ashanti) scored a 2-1 points decision over Rashidi Mohammed of B/A in their featherweight encounter. In the lightweight fray, hard-hitting Rock Kwame (B/A) scored a first round knockout victory over Kojo Kounde (Ashanti) while Jacob Rasta (B/A) gained a 2-1 split decision over Kaba Musa (Ashanti) in their light-welterweight combat. Frank Tutu of B/A was disqualified midway in the third round for persistently hitting below the belt in his light-middleweight bout with Alhassan Massawood of Ashanti. Earlier, in the non-scoring curtain raiser fights, Kobla Akakpo of B/A won on points over James Allou of Ashanti in the featherweight clash while Debemba of Ashanti region lost on points to Baba Anafo of B/A. Mbassarya of Ashanti region defeated Wambila Whitaker of B/A on points. Meanwhile, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Sunyani today Mr John Bosco Abase, the regional boxing coach of the National Sports Council (NSC) was optimistic of better performance of his boys in the festival. “The tournament with the Ashanti regional side gave me a chance to assess and evaluate the battle-readiness of my boxers.
