The Asawase Constituency New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Kumasi could be heading to court anytime soon over a recently held party elections.
The party could be cited for contempt for allegedly restraining a bailiff from serving the party executives with an injunction summons.
Former Asawase Constituency Chairman of NPP, Peter Otchere, told DAILY GUIDE that a bailiff was at the venue of the NPP polls on Friday.
He claimed that some party goons, with full force, prevented the bailiff from serving the party executives with injunction summons when voting was ongoing.
Mr. Otchere said the party election held in the constituency on Friday was illegal because some party men secured injunction earlier to stop the polls.
He therefore noted that preventing the bailiff from serving the party executives with the injunction summons did not make the election process legal.
Mr. Otchere cautioned that the Asawase Constituency NPP could be cited for contempt soon, for defying the court order and going ahead with the polls.
He alleged that the sitting NPP chairman at Asawase, Isaac Brenya, handpicked his favourites during the party’s polling station elections.
According to him, the Asawase Constituency NPP did not organize polling station elections as mandated by the party’s constitution.
He explained that the chairman’s decision to handpick his favourites motivated other NPP members to seek injunction to be placed on the constituency polls.
Mr. Otchere charged the NPP leadership to order the Asawase Constituency to organize fresh polling station elections to select executives to avert legal tussle.
He also urged the NPP to organize free and fair elections across all the constituencies in the country to promote party unity.
He said any attempt by some people to force their way through in the polling station and constituency polls might hurt the party later on.
Mr. Otchere said the NPP needed total unity and peace to defeat the unimpressed NDC government in 2016, stressing that the NPP must put its house in order first.
In this regard, he cautioned NPP members against adopting dubious means to occupy key party positions since that could create discord.
