Kumasi, Feb 26, GNA – The Asawase constituency in the Kumasi metropolis has benefited from the Government Accountability Improves Trust (GAIT) Two project.
The pilot project has already taken off and is being undertaken jointly by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA). Mr Raymond Danso, Project Co-ordinator, disclosed this at the launch of the project at Aboabo in Kumasi on Saturday. He said one of the objectives of the project is to strengthen democratic and decentralized governance through civic involvement and increased community advocacy for quality education. It would also strengthen the capacity building of the KMA staff, other sub-metropolitan areas as well as the Town Council members to enable the communities in the area to initiate their own developmental projects.
Mr Danso said democratic governance grows from the grassroots and hence the need for the people to participate in discussing important developmental issues to enhance their living conditions. The Project Co-ordinator stressed the need for the various partners in the programme to be dedicated and committed to the objectives of the project to ensure its successful implementation. Madam Patricia Appiagyei, Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, in a speech read for her, expressed happiness for the project and hoped that it would enhance the living conditions of the people, especially in improving their education about national issues. Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, Member of Parliament (MP) for Asawase, urged the unit committees to educate the people on the importance of the project to enable them to play their proper roles to ensure the success of the project.
Mr Kwame Badu Kaakyire, assemblyman for Krofuom in the metropolis, who chaired the function, extended gratitude and appreciation to the USAID for sponsoring the three-year project. Feb. 26 06
