Asantehene honors 100 rural-based teachers

One hundred heads of public basic schools from rural areas across the country have been honored by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu the second.

The Otumfuo Teachers and Education Workers Awards was introduced three years ago to reward and motivate teachers who work in rural areas.

At a ceremony at the Manhyia Place, Otumfuo Osei Tutu pledged continued support to ensure deprived communities get a fair share of teacher distribution.

Some award recipients shared their impression on the event, and some of the challenges facing those working in remote communities.

“It is not easy. Asking parents to buy stationery for their children…absenteeism is at its peak…you have to convince them a lot before you get them to teach”, one recipient revealed.

The recipients also expressed their gratitude for the award and said they were inspired to work harder.
