Asantehene commemorates 60th birthday in grand style

Kumasi, May 3, GNA – A grand durbar of chiefs and people of Ashanti was on Sunday held at the Manhyia Palace to mark the 60th birthday anniversary of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu 11. The event coincided with the “Akwasidae”, one of the sacred days on the Asante calendar.

It was all joy with culture at its best, as the Asantehene, clad in a beautiful kente cloth and gold ornaments, appeared at the forecourt of the Palace at about 1400 hours, amidst firing of musketries and playing of “fontomfrom”, “kete” and other traditional drums. Some cultural troupes also danced the “adowa” and sang traditional lyrics to wish the King a long and prosperous life. Thousands of Ghanaians and guests from all parts of the world joined in the celebration.

Among those at the ceremony were the former President John Agyekum Kufuor, former and present Ministers of State, members of the Diplomatic Corps, Alhaji Ado Bayero, Emir of Kano, Sir Dr Chief Gabriel Igbiedon, Esama of Benin, Assemien Nogbou, King of the Council of Chiefs in La Cote D’ Ivoire and King Alayehiwa Oba Olubuse 11, Ooni of Ife in Nigeria.

As Otumfuo Osei Tutu sat in state the Golden Stool, which symbolizes the Soul of Asanteman, was placed beside his left hand to signify his authority in the kingdom. In line with tradition, Paramount Chiefs, some chiefs in Kumasi, royals, special guests and dignitaries went in turns to pay homage to him and to wish him well.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu was enstooled in 1999 as the 16th occupant of the Golden Stool and had since worked hard to keep the Ashanti culture alive.

He is also credited with various initiatives, including the Otumfuo Education Fund and Otumfuo Charity Foundation.
