Asantehene announces special award for best engineering student

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has announced a special award for the best engineering student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

The modalities are to be worked out between his office and that of the Vice Chancellor.

The Asantehene made this known when the Ghana Institution of Engineers conferred on him an Honorary Fellow at the Manhyia Palace.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu, who is also the Chancellor of the University, recognised the important role engineers were playing in the nation’s development, saying, the well-being, development and sustainability of communities depended largely on them.

He appealed to the Government to take steps to implement the “local content policy” to protect the indigenous engineering practice.

He pledged to give every necessary support to the promotion of science and engineering practice.

Mr Albert Ogyiri, President of the Institution, said founded in 1968, they now have more than 2,942 members excluding student members.

Among the aims of the institution is to help to advance science, development of engineering practices as well as managing and registering qualified engineers.

A citation accompanying the honour praised the Asantehene’s achievements in the areas of education, health and poverty reduction.**
