Asante Mampong water project fails to meet expectation?

Despite the much touted $21.6 million dollar water project for Asante Mampong as an achievement of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama and his National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, residents are faced with acute water shortage currently.

President Mahama, at his last visit to the Ashanti region inspected some projects and inaugurated a $21.6 million Mampong Water Supply Rehabilitation and Expansion Project in Mampong that has been penciled as an unprecedented.

But The Chronicle can confirm that residents are going through a herculean period because water supply to households in Mampong and its environs is not best as the taps have become drier and drier because water is not flowing through them.

Information reaching The Chronicle indicates that apart from Zongo, New Town, Akyeremade, Asikafour Amantem, Tunsuom and a few other places, majority of the 90,000 people in the Municipality have problem accessing potable drinking water.

At Nsuta, Beposo and other areas, the situation has forced residents to drill mechanized boreholes and erect Poly tanks in their homes. The development has been attributed to low voltage in the areas which has been corroborated by the Municipal Chief Executive of Asante Mampong, Mohammed Kojo Aboasu, who confirmed that the residents are indeed experiencing water shortage.

The MCE told The Chronicle on phone that he had met with the head of Ghana Water Company (GWCL) in Mampong, Mr. Afum to inform himself about the situation. He said water was flowing as at Monday but supply is on ration basis as it cannot be supplied to the whole town simultaneously.

Kojo Aboasu mentioned inadequate electricity to power the machines to run and dry season as contributing to the water shortage. He also noted that the dry season too is a contributing factor to the problem, to which he said dry season affects power distribution to keep the machine working.
