Asante Kotoko have expressed profound sorrow and solidarity with Aduana Stars following the tragic death of two supporters in a road accident after the clubs’ league meeting in Kumasi. Two others were injured in the incident, which occurred as the fans travelled back to Dormaa Ahenkro.
In a statement signed by IMC Chairman Nana Apinkra Akwasi Awuah, Kotoko described the news as “devastating,” noting that football is meant to “build bridges and foster camaraderie,” not bring heartbreak. The club emphasised that the tragedy has shaken the entire Ghanaian football community.
Kotoko extended “deepest and most sincere condolences” to the bereaved families, the Aduana Stars fraternity, and the people of Dormaa Ahenkro. The club said the loss of the passionate fans, who had travelled to support their team, was “an immense blow” shared by all lovers of the sport.
The Porcupine Warriors also wished the two injured supporters a swift and full recovery, offering thoughts and prayers to them and their families.
“In this moment of profound sorrow, we stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters at Aduana Stars FC,” the statement read. “The rivalry on the pitch is fierce, but it is eclipsed by the bond of humanity and shared passion that unites us.”
Asante Kotoko concluded by praying for comfort for all affected and eternal rest for the departed supporters.
The Ghana Premier League has witnessed several incidents involving travelling fans in recent years, sparking renewed calls for improved safety measures for supporters on matchdays.
