Asante-Bekwai NPP Constituency meeting ends in confusion

Foase-Kokoben (Ash), Dec 22, GNA – A meeting by the Asante-Bekwai Constituency of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to deliberate on the modalities for electing polling station executive at Foase-Kokoben on Sunday ended in confusion.

Intervention by the Police Buffalo Unit from Kumasi prevented what would have been a bloody confrontation. It all started when about five muscled men brought to the meeting by the Constituency Chairman, Mr C.O. Attah, began assaulting some supporters perceived to be sworn opponents of the Chairman. This angered the party’s youth who fought back fiercely forcing the assailants to flee in their vehicle.

The youth also chased Mr Atta to a nearby house where but for the swift response of the police he would have been beaten. It took a lot of persuasion by the Member of Parliament (MP), Mr Joe Osei-Owusu, to calm down the irate youth and allow the police to escort the Chairman away.

Two people, Kwadwo Antwi and Aboagye Sakyi, received cuts and were treated at the Bekwai Government Hospital.

Feuding factions of the party last October settled their differences and pledged to work together to grow the NPP in the area. Mr Kennedy Kankam, the Ashanti Regional Youth Organizer, expressed disappointment about the turn of events and said they would do everything to bring peace to the party.

The MP later told the supporters that the validation of the electoral roll for the polling station officers’ election had been completed Mr Osei-Owusu advised them to maintain a united front and work hard to recapture political power in 2012.
