Asante-Akim South builds Lorry Park

The Asante-Akim South District Assembly has started building a GH¢281,238.00 lorry park as part of efforts to broaden its internal revenue generation base.

The project is being financed from the District Development Fund (DDF) and would on completion help to ensure that all drivers operate from a central point to streamline their operations and restore some level of sanity.

Mr De-graft Fokuo, the District Chief Executive, said it would end the situation where many transport operators evade payment of tolls to the assembly.

He told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the absence of such a park with secure parking and other facilities for drivers and passengers had been to the disadvantage of the Assembly in terms of revenue generation.

The GNA had visited the area under STAR-Ghana’s media auditing and tracking of development projects, an initiative launched to put a spotlight on how government’s resources were helping to transform the lives of the people, particularly the rural population.

The goal is to see to it that there is transparency, promote accountability and good governance.

Mr Fokuo said the project, awarded to local contractors, Dankus Dee Company Limited, is expected to be ready within four months.

The assembly has tasked its works department to closely monitor the job execution to make sure that there is value for money.
