ARSRC condemns student unrest at Komfo Anokye Secondary School

Kumasi, April 14, GNA – The Ashanti Regional Students’ Representative Council (ARSRC) has condemned the student’s riot at the Komfo Anokye Secondary School at Wiamoase in the Afigya-Sekyere District of Ashanti.

The Council also expressed total shock at the purported patronage of brothels by some senior secondary schools in the Kumasi metropolis. A statement issued in Kumasi and signed by Mr Raphael Sarkodie, Regional Co-ordinator of the ARSRC said, these developments had dealt a big blow to the proper channelling of grievances, discipline and morality preached by the Council in its decade of existence. “Over the years, there has been relative calm in a number of schools as a result of orientation exercise conducted for almost all the 90 second cycle schools in the region, pointing out that the exercise sought to strengthen the concept and principles of the Student Representative Council (SRC) in the channelling of grievances of students to school authorities”.

The Council therefore, condemned the action, which it described as barbaric and called on the committee set up to investigate the act to fast-track its work to bring the ring leaders to book. “With the closure of the school, innocent students will suffer unjustifiably, because of the deeds of some few social deviants and misfits. We therefore, called on the committee and school authorities to expedite the investigation process for the resumption of academic work for the sake of the innocent students”. The Council also expressed total dissatisfaction with the publication on visits to brothels some students of second cycle schools in Kumasi and said the publication has tarnished the reputation of the schools. The statement therefore, entreated students involved in this to desist from such unwholesome acts and called on students to serve as watchdogs and expose such evil practices among their fellow students to safeguard the integrity and reputation of their schools. 14 April 06
