Arsenal have reached an agreement with Sporting CP to sign Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres in a deal worth up to €73.5 million, marking a significant step in Mikel Arteta’s bid to strengthen his attack ahead of the new Premier League season.
The Gunners will pay a €63.5 million fixed fee for the 26-year-old, with an additional €10 million in performance-related add-ons. Personal terms have already been agreed, with Gyökeres set to sign a five-year contract at the Emirates.
Sources close to the negotiations say the deal was fast-tracked after the player’s representatives agreed to reduce their commission to facilitate the move.
Gyökeres had a standout season in Portugal, scoring 29 goals in all competitions for Sporting and attracting interest from several European clubs. But Arsenal moved swiftly to secure the forward, who Arteta sees as a key missing piece in the club’s push for silverware.
The move is expected to add depth and dynamism to Arsenal’s frontline, providing a more traditional centre-forward option.
Gyökeres will become Arsenal’s marquee signing of the summer and is expected to join the squad on their pre-season tour in the coming days.
