Nyinahin (Ash.) Nov 24, GNA – The District Chief Executive for Atwima-Mponua, Mrs Theresa Adomako-Tawiah, has called for rigid enforcement of traffic laws to stop the carnage on the roads. The police, she said, should do more to arrest speeding and drunk drivers.
The call comes barely five days after a car crash at Mpasatia in the district that killed four people with 10 others suffering deep cuts and broken bones.
They were travelling on a mini-bus from Kumasi to Sankore in the Brong-Ahafo Region when the driver attempted to overtake an articulated truck and ran into the rear of a timber truck and fell on its side Mrs Adomako-Tawiah, inaugurating a seven-member Road Safety Committee for the area at Nyinahin, said the mess on the roads should not be allowed to continue.
The committee is made up of personnel from Ghana Police Service, Fire Service, National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Information Service Department and the Education Directorate.
Mrs Adomako-Tawiah said the expectation was that the Committee would ensure effective road safety education in the area to prevent accidents. The police have also mounted a man-hunt for a “hit and run driver” who, knocked down a young man, killing him instantly at Nyinahin at the weekend. James Atuahene-Karikari’s body had been deposited at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Mortuary.
