Army worms ‘attack’ Dormaa

Dormaa Ahenkro (B/A), Oct. 14, GNA – Army worms have attacked the over 200 hectare minor season maize farm being cultivated under the Dormaa District Assembly’s Youth In Agriculture Programme. Mr Henry Kofi Oppong, District Employment Coordinator who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency at Dormaa Ahenkro in Brong Ahafo said the staff of Dormaa District Directorate of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture had confirmed this.

He said intensive and sustained spraying exercise had begun to hedge the farm against devastation by the worms. Mr Oppong announced that the spraying exercise, which was being carried out under the technical advice of MOFA, would be extended to stop the worms from spreading to other farms. He said the project was expected to produce maize to feed poultry farms in the district, which is notable in the poultry industry, adding that 300 million cedis would be spent on the farm, which has 270 workers.

The Coordinator said the District Assembly and its development partners were making efforts to help reduce unemployment amongst the youth to eventually eradicate idleness and criminal activities in the area.

He said Youth Sanitation and Waste Management, Youth in Community Policing, Youth in Auxiliary Nursing and Youth in Pupil Teaching, were modules the Assembly was preparing to address. 14 Oct. 06
