Aflao, May 14, GNA – A group of armed robbers took attendants of a Glory Oil fuel station at Aflao hostage and made away with millions of cedis in a robbery on Wednesday, but harmed no one.
Aflao police said they were looking at the possibility that the robbery might be linked to two similar ones nearly a week before, one at a Shell fuel station at Denu and the other in the premises of a businesswoman at Aflao.
Mr Baba Moro Aflao Police District Crime Officer told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that victims put the age of the thugs who struck at the three places between 15 and 18 years. The Crime Officer said by the description of what happened, the thugs who were fully armed and wearing masks, acted with precision. He said five of those who robbed the Glory Oil Fuel Station at the main Aflao Market Junction were armed with locally made pistols and a pump action gun.
Mr Moro said they struck at about 0120 hours on Wednesday, seized a security man on guard and marched him to the station office where two fuel attendants were resting.
He said the robbers asked the two attendants and the security man to lie face down and show them where monies had been kept, whereupon they forced tree wooden cabinets open and took away 9 million cedis being sales for the night.
In the premises of Miss Rita De-Souza, the businesswoman two armed men scaled the wall into the house at Aflao, broke into her room at about 1130 hours on Friday and robbed her of 814,000 CFA francs, (about 40 million cedis) and other valuables.
Mr Moro said in the early hours of May 5, four armed men using handkerchiefs as masks stormed a Shell filling station at Denu and stole an unspecified amount of money.
The crime wave had abated eight months on end in the Ketu District, following a major security crackdown on criminals and arrests of major suspects in October last year until this recent occurrences, generating a new wave of anxiety among residents.
Mr Moro said the Police were determined to tackle the situation saying, “We are up to our task and we will soon close up on them”. 14 May 06
