Armed men attack securitymen and seizes gun

Accra, April 16, GNA – A policeman and three private security personnel were attacked at dawn on Friday by some suspected armed robbers at the Japan Motors workshop in Accra.

They are Police Constable Ampim Darko, Theophilus Boakye, Kwesi Ansah and Benneth Buabeng, all from a private security firm. Reliable Police sources told the Ghana News Agency in Accra that the armed men wielding cutlasses, and other offensive weapons hit and wounded the policeman on duty on the head and one of the private security men at the scene and made away with an AK 47 machine gun of the Ghana Police Service.

The sources said the policeman and the private security man were seriously wounded but the policeman was on admission at the Police Hospital, responding to treatment.

He said the other two private security men were blindfolded by the suspected armed robbers, who made away with a labtop computer, two security cameras, a radio player and some money. The source said the suspected robbers also drank bottles of champagne at scene before fleeing.

When contacted, Chief Superintendent of Police Bright Oduro, Greater Accra Regional Crime Officer confirmed the story and said police investigations had begun to identify and apprehend the suspected robbers.

He said the modus operandi of this latest attack had a semblance of the robbery attacks on the Ghana Cylinder Company, First Catering Services, offices of the Organisation of African Association of Trade Unions (OAATU) last year where within a spate of 10 days, various robberies were recorded within a particular area. The Regional Crime Officer said these robbers always broke into office and warehouse premises with instruments, tie up security personnel and ransacked the premises. 16 April 04
