Armed Forces To Take Delivery Of Choppers

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) is to take delivery of four helicopters from Russia by the end of October, this year, to boost its operations. The helicopters are being purchased from a $55million loan contracted by the GAF loan from the Barclays bank and approved by Parliament.

The move formed part of the plans to adequately equip personnel of the GAF to discharge their duties effectively and efficiently. Dr. Kwame Addo Kufuor, minister of defence announced this when he paid a working visit to the Jungle Warfare School of the GAF at Achiase, to boost the morale of personnel of the GAF undertaking an exercise with their counterparts from the Tree Commando Brigade of the Royal Marine of the United Kingdom.

The exercise code-named ?Exercise Western Rhumba 2004,? was jointly organised by the British Royal Commando and the GAF to improve the military relationship between the two armed forces. It was also to provide opportunity for the British Commandos to practice recce skills in a jungle environment, insertion drills by small boat and helicopter. Dr. Addo-Kufuor said plans were far advanced to adequately equip the Jungle Warfare School to upgrade its training for soldiers. He commend the British government for the tremendous support it had offered the GAF and the country as a whole.
