APRM interim report ready

Accra, Jan. 27, GNA – The National African Peer Review Mechanism Governing Council on Thursday presented its interim report to the Government at the Castle, Osu.

Receiving the report, President John Agyekum Kufuor said the Council was not a government agency but an organisation that operated within civil society to monitor governance in the country. He said the Government would take a cue from the report of the Council to improve on its performance.

President Kufuor said the work of the Council would be a continuous one, as good governance would continue as long as governments and political consciousness existed.

Professor S. K. Adjapong, Principal of the Methodist University and Chairman of the Council, said their tenure of office would end soon and it was appropriate to present an interim report to the Government.

The review process is a self-monitoring mechanism intended to foster the adoption of policies, standards and practices that would lead to political stability, high economic growth rate and sustainable development.

It would also accelerate West African and African economic integration through the sharing of experiences and the reinforcement of successful best practices, including identifying deficiencies and assessing the needs of capacity building.

The seven-member Council was inaugurated on Thursday, March 18, 2004.

Other members of the Council are, Mrs Gloria Ofori-Boadu, Founder and President of Women Assistance and Business Association; Mr Nutifafa Kofi Kuenyehia, a Private Legal Practitioner and Professor S.K.B. Asante, an International Consultant.

The rest are, Professor Miranda Greenstreet, formerly of the Institute of Adult Education, University of Ghana, Legon, the Most Reverend Paul Bemile, Catholic Bishop of Wa and Mr Alex Abankwa, a Career Diplomat.
