Techiman (B/A), Dec. 13, GNA – A Circuit Court in Techiman has fined an electric welder’s apprentice at Takofiano two million cedis or in default go to jail for 6 months in hard labour for possessing a fake 5,000 cedi note.
Noah Boakye, pleaded guilty to the charge.
Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Sampson Y. Jebuni told that court presided over by Mr. Justice Erasmus Gyinae, a High Court Judge sitting as a Circuit Court Judge in Techiman that, on September 18, this year, the accused person sent a 14-year-old house help, Barikisu, with the 5,000 cedi note to buy him a candle at a provisions store belonging to Mr. Sulemana Mahama at Takofiano.
Chief Inspector Jebuni said the storeowner Mr. Mahama served the minor and gave her a change of 4,000 cedis.
He said the complainant later detected that the 5,000 cedi note brought to him for the purchase of the candle was fake and he quickly reported the matter to the accused person’s father and later lodged a complaint with the Police.
According to the prosecution, the Police arrested Boakye and Barikisu.
Chief Inspector Jebuni said the currency note was sent to the Bank of Ghana where it was certified as fake.
Before imposing the fine, Mr. Justice Gyinae cautioned and discharged Barikisu since she was just an errand girl. He ordered for the immediate destruction of the currency note.
