Members of the Rotaract Club of Tema, on Saturday left Appolonia, a community in the Kpone/Katamanso constituency disappointed when the people failed to turn up to receive books the Club intended to donate to a school in the community.
Elders and opinion leaders of the community were at the grounds for the funeral rites of a relative and therefore could not receive members of the Club.
Also absent to receive the donors were the head teacher of the school and the Chairman of the Parent Teacher Association, Mr Darpoh and Mr S.T. Nortey respectively who knew of the Club’s intention.
Members of the Club had gone to the community to present supplementary books, novels, boxes of chalk and some teaching aids valued at 3.2 million cedis to the Methodist Primary School.
When contacted the Chief Linguist said the Elders could not leave the funeral grounds “for even thirty minutes” to receive the items because the deceased was a close relative.
With the turn of events members of the Club returned to Tema with the items.
Mr Sylvanus Adjetey-Sowah, Secretary of the Club speaking to the GNA said members of the Club adopted the school about a year and embarked on a project dubbed “teach the child to read and write” to provide assistance.
He said members visited the village twice every fortnight to teach the pupils and decided to present the items to them.
Mr Adjetey-Sowah expressed the regret of the executives for the incident but promised that the Club would go ahead with its plans for the renovation of the school.
