Apam (C/R), Jan 18, GNA – The Landing Beach Committee at Apam has supported taxi drivers in the area with free petrol worth GH?4,000.
Speaking at a function, after the Committee had supported the taxi drivers at Apam, Ebusuapanyin Kojo Yooyo, a member of the Committee said the gesture was in appreciation of the assistance of the taxi drivers to the people of the area.
He said they normally convey pregnant women free of charge to hospital when they were in labour.
Ebusuapanyin Yooyo said the fuel was bought from the profit accrued from the sale of premix fuel supplied to the Committee.
He commended the drivers and appealed to them to maintain their vehicles regularly for a longer lifespan and also to make it attractive to passengers.
Mr Ebenezer Crentsil, Secretary to the Committee said unlike the previous executive members of the committee, the current Landing Committee had done a lot to improve the living standards of the people.
He said the Committee had provided a public bath house at the cost of GH?8,360, the extension of electricity to the beach area and street lights amounting to GH?13,600, to enable the fishermen to sell their catch at night.
Mr Crentsil said a toilet at the beach was rehabilitated at a cost of GH?1,000, whilst some fishmongers were assisted with an amount of GHC 10,000, to help their businesses and another GHC 1,000 to support brilliant but needy students.
Mr theophilus Aidoo-Mensah, Gomoa West District Chief Executive commended the Committee for doing a good job.
He said the Committee, which was inaugurated about two and a half years ago had demonstrated that with hard work and accountability landing beaches could improve the conditions in the communities where they operated.
The DCE appealed to the people not to politicise the fuel supply.
Mr Ebenezer Quaquah, Chairman of the Taxi Union of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union on behalf of the drivers thanked the Committee for the gesture.
Over 300 taxis were served with free fuel.
