Another Afforadble Housing Project In Danger

By Citizen News Desk

After government’s effort to build affordable houses for low and middle class citizens failed to materialize due to board room wrangling by the management of STX, another affordable housing project is on the verge of collapsing.
A private estate development company, Agu Resources Ghana Limited, that came to government’s rescue to build such houses at Odumase/Nsakina in the Amasaman District of the Greater Accra Region would soon be heading for the law courts, following a threat by the real land owners who claim the leasing company of the said land has flouted the terms of the lease, thereby acting in bad faith towards the original owners.
According to the information available to The Citizen Newspaper, Agu Resources Ghana Limited was reported to have begun construction of 10,000 affordable housing units
According to Nii Amardey Asamani, member of the Odumasi, Acquah and Asamani families, whose custodian, the late Nii Achia Quarshie, Head of the families, leased the land to Adicopa Farms Ltd, the current leasing company in the whole affair. The land he said was leased on September 11, 1987 solely for farming purposes and the agreement was that it should not be used for any other thing.
In his rejoinder to the Daily Graphic’s publication on a visit to the area by the two companies to cut sod for the beginning of the project, Nii Armardey said, “Adicopa Farms has never signed any memo with the family, changing the use of the land from farming to estate development.”
He further alleged that, “the unnatural death of Nii Achia Quarshie on April 14, 2000 (supported by autopsy report), coupled with recent developments surrounding the use of the land, raises suspicion of some orchestrations by some elements who have ulterior motives, so far as ownership of the land is concerned.”
“As per a search at the Lands Commission, with document Number O/S5261/11 signed by one Opoku Boateng Anthony for the Executive Secretary of the Lands Commission, the land was leased to Adicop Farms Ltd by Nii Achia Quarshie, so any activity that is not supported by a document from the original owners of the land, contrary to the lease agreement is ILLEGAL.” He explained.
He warned that the families would use any legal means at their disposal to ensure that, they are not shortchanged or taken advantage of.
