Kumasi, Aug 3, GNA – The chiefs and residents of Anloga have given the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) a two-week ultimatum within which to put on the streetlights it installed four-and-a-half years ago in the community or be faced with a peaceful demonstration by the people. Nana Nanabanyin Ninsin-Mbeah, Fante Chief of Anloga and Spokesman for the community, explained that the intended demonstration was merely to draw attention of the KMA and the contractor to the displeasure of the Anloga community about the long delay in putting on the streetlights.
Nana Ninsin-Mbeah gave the ultimatum at a public forum in Kumasi on Saturday organised by Mr Amidu Gariba, Assemblyman for Anloga and the unit committee to interact with the electorate and brief them on projects and programmes of the KMA and also ascertain their development problems at first hand.
They said the demonstrators would include residents of Oforikrom, Aboabo Number One and Aboabo Number Two, who also benefited under the same streetlight project but have still not had their lights on. Responding, Mr Maxwell Kofi Jumah, Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, advised the people to exercise restraint since frantic efforts were being made by the KMA to get in touch with the contractor to get streetlights lit.
He said providing streetlights for the entire Metropolis would cost the KMA 16 billion cedis, adding the total revenue generated in 2002 was 13.5 billion cedis.
Mr Gariba appealed to the KMA to help with the rehabilitation of some access roads in the Anloga community and construct a bridge to link Anloga to Susanakyi to facilitate vehicular movement between the two communities.
Mr Gabriel K. Dwomoh, Assemblyman for Oforikrom, appealed to the Member of Parliament (MP) for Asokwa West, Mr Edward Osei-Kwaku and the KMA to expedite the dredging of the Aboabo and the Susan streams to stop the annual floods in the area. 08Aug.2003
