Ho, April 26, GNA – The Anlo Traditional Council on Monday disassociated itself from a recent petition calling on President John Agyekum Kufuor to remove the Keta District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr E. K Vorkeh from office for being hostile to Chiefs in the District. The Anlo Traditional Council in statement dated April 26 signed by Togbi Agbesi Awusu II, Awadada of Anlo and Acting President of the Council, addressed to President Kufuor and faxed to the media in Ho dissociated it from the petition.
The statement said the Council was unhappy with the Volta Regional Minister, Mr Kwasi Owusu-Yeboa for entertaining the petitioners led by Togbi Sri III “to present such a very sensitive petition, which has the capacity to destabilize the otherwise peaceful Keta District”.
The Awadada asserted that there had been no time that the Council met and decided to petition the President to remove the DCE for Keta, Mr E.K. Vorkeh from office.
The statement, therefore, urged President Kufuor and the general public to disregard the petition for the removal of the DCE for Keta. According to the statement the Council had never discussed any issue of the DCE being hostile to the chiefs of Anlo, interfering in their affairs or ever “preventing them from performing their rightful and constitutional duties to educate the people of Keta District on Government policies”.
The statement said that all the Chiefs in the district, who were contacted about that petition, expressed dismay about it because on the contrary “they find the DCE hardworking, affable and respectful to them”.
On Friday April 20, a delegation of 11 Divisional Chiefs including Togbi Addo of Klikor and led by Togbi Sri called on the Volta Regional Minister and among other things presented a petition calling for the immediate removal of Mr Vorkeh from Office for interfering in chieftaincy matters and preventing them from carrying out their constitutionally mandated functions as chiefs.
Some of the specific charges against Mr Vorkeh were that he forcibly prevented the Council from holding a meeting in the Keta District Assembly Hall and for preventing the Chiefs from attending a recent inauguration of the second phase of the Keta Sea Defence Resettlement Project at Kedzi “even when they were dutifully invited” 26 April 04
