Angry workers of the Ghana Water Company’s Weija treatment plant have shut down the unit. They are protesting the arrest of two workers at the plant. The unit serves Western Accra and shutdown would result in the lack of water to that part of the metropolis. The workers engaged in a standoff with a police team this morning, as the officers demanded entry into the compound treatment plant ahead of the inauguration of a university. The workers allege that the Water Company’s training school, which is on their compound, has been sold off and privatized without the necessary consultation to new managers.
Their two colleagues were bundied off to an unknown destination as they engaged in an argument with the police officers. The local Union Vice chairman, Daniel Botwe told JOY News that all water treatment plants across the country will be shut down if the two men are not released.
According to him, the Kpong treatment plant will soon be shut down to be followed by other plants in the country.
Mr. Botwe says managers of the treatment unit were also unaware of the inauguration of the Golden State University at the Water Training School. This prompted the staff to refuse the police entry into the compound.
