The youth of Wa in the Upper West Region are demanding the immediate demotion of a young female police officer Believe Amedzro for “insulting” the natives on Facebook.
She referred to the natives as “fools” and “criminals” and wondered if she was not living in “hell” adding: “I hate police in a stupid town called Wa. Proud to be a Voltarian”.
Her commentaries were in response to the reaction of some residents who had expressed anger at the police in the region for shooting a motor rider in the town last Saturday.
Her remarks have not gone down well with the locals, who have vowed to take action against her in their own way. Others have also requested for her immediate transfer from the municipality.
Speaking to Moro Awudu on Class91.3FM’s Executive Breakfast Show on Wednesday, 5 April, a native of the area, Issa, said: “We want her to be demoted in rank”.
According to him, she must not be transferred but rather reduced in rank since “her life is in not in danger, nobody is going to harm her”.
Meanwhile, the Public Affairs Director of the Upper West regional police command, ASP Joy Afagbedzi, has described the female police officer as a “calm, respectful and quiet” person. He said the police service was surprised by the Facebook comments of the officer and has begun investigations into the matter at the headquarters in Accra.
Public Affairs Director of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Cephas Arthur also told Moro Awudu on Wednesday in a separate interview that the officer’s ethnocentric comments were in bad taste but assured the people of the area that the matter will be appropriately dealt with. He commended the natives of Wa for their calm composure in the aftermath of incident.
